| The Bensenville Community Public Library District is proud to host President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for a Fireside Chat on the evening of Friday, September 11, 2009. As a part of the Libraries Remember commemoration, President Roosevelt will join us in the Lifelong Learning Center at 7:30 p.m. Often referred to by his initials, FDR was the 32nd President of the United States. During the Great Depression of the 1930's, he created the New Deal to provide relief for the unemployed, recovery of the economy, and the reform of the banking and economic systems of the United States. After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt lead the United States into World War II. Between 1933 and 1944, FDR delivered thirty evening radio speeches that became known as his Fireside Chats. This evening he will deliver, exclusively for us, Fireside Chat #31. President Roosevelt will speak informally about his Presidency, and he will share stories about Eleanor, Winston Churchill, "Uncle Joe" Stalin and Fala the President's Dog. He will read Depression-Era letters from citizens asking for help, and he will recount the New Deal Programs designed to help in the days of widespread foreclosures, bank failures, and unemployment. The President will also speak on a subject dear to him-the work accomplished at Warm Springs for people afflicted with polio. President Roosevelt will share his memories of the challenges of World War II and the many ifs facing the nation in 1942. At the conclusion of his talk, the President will respond to questions from the audience. Please join us for this special evening with the President. |
