Memories

Sunday, September 11, 2011
The Bensenville Community Public Library
200 S. Church Road
Bensenville, IL  60106

12:00 a.m.        The library will open at midnight on Saturday and remain open for the
twenty-four hours of September 11.  Just prior to opening, the flag will be raised
in front of the library as part of a very brief ceremony.  All community members
are invited to attend, then join us as we wait for the sun to rise on another
September 11.

12:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m.        Young adults from Bensenville will gather at the library to create a
very special video - Memories of September 11, 2001.

12:00 p.m. - 12:45     Mountain Jack will visit the library, and he will be accompanied by
Scribbles the Bear.  Mountain Jack tells wonderful tales of life in the woods, and he will delight
young listeners age 7 and younger.  The kids will be going outside to the library's story circle
where Scribbles the Bear will introduce them to Mountain Jack.  (Moms and Dads will be
invited to stay inside to relax with a cup of coffee while the kids enjoy the stories.)  Mountain
Jack will tell stories for about half an hour, and then there will be time for photographs with the
kids, Scribbles the Bear, and Mountain Jack -- bring your cameras!

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.        During this hour, Bensenville students will present the work they
have been doing in recognition of September 11, 2001.

2:45 p.m.        Dedication of the Bensenville Community Quilt

3:00 p.m.        Thomas Alva Edison will visit the library.  Mr. Edison will speak of his
life of invention and share pictures to tell his life story.  He will explain how it took over 1,000
tries to find the right filament for his new invention - the light bulb.  He will talk about the
creation of his favorite invention - the phonograph and how people believed it was a hoax
and that he was actually just a ventriloquist.  We will also hear of Mr. Edison's desire to do
for the eye what he had done for the ear.... so he developed motion pictures and
released his first movie,
The Great Train Robbery, in 1903.

Thomas Edison will join us in the Lifelong Learning Center at 3:00 p.m.
 Please note that
tickets are required for this performance.
Tickets are free and they will be distributed at the
adult reference desk beginning Monday, August 29.

4:30 p.m.        The library will host a reception for Thomas Edison and community members
who attended his presentation.

6:30 p.m.        Beginning at 6:30, a Sunset Commemorative Service will be held in the Garden
of Knowledge.  Lasting less than an hour, this annual event is an opportunity for anyone who
would like to speak, to share a memory, to do so.  It is always a moving event, held in a
magnificent setting.  If you would like to speak, contact Jill at the library.  If you would like to
listen, simply be at the library at 6:30 p.m.

7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.        With memories of how all of America joined together with such unity
of purpose in the days following 9/11/2001, the library will host a family community service
project in cooperation with Helping Hands.  More information will be posted here as it
becomes available.

7:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.        Join us at anytime from 7:30 until midnight to participate in Steps
for Change.  The Garden of Knowledge will glow with over 100 luminaries designed by the
students of Bensenville.  You will have an opportunity to follow the illuminated path through the
Garden and stop at several displays designed to inspire.  At the end of the walk, you will be
asked to sign the final display, a wall of commitments to take Steps for Change.

Midnight:        Please join us as we lower the flag and close Libraries Remember for another
year.
