Libraries Remember
September 11, 2009
The Bensenville Agenda for September 11, 2009
Confirmed Events

12:00 a.m.        Opening

Please join us in front of the library.  Prior to opening the
doors, we will have a very short program.  Once open, the
doors will remain open for the next 24 hours.

12:00 a.m.        Library Book Sale

When we open the library at midnight, we will also begin
a twenty-four hour book sale in the meeting room.  Stop by
anytime during the twenty-four hours of September 11 and
browse through hundreds of used books on sale at $1.00 for
hardbacks and three-for-a dollar paperbacks.  The book sale
will also be open on Saturday, September 12, from 9:00 a.m.
until 3:00 p.m.

6:15 a.m.        Sunrise Commemorative Service

The Sunrise Service has become a tradition for Libraries
Remember, and it always is a moving tribute to the spirit of the
day.  You may participate by speaking for a few minutes --
read something meaningful to you, share a poem, a song....
anything.  Our theme for the day is Journeys.  You may also
participate by simply sitting and listening to others.  The
Sunrise Service takes place in the Library Garden, and we ask
that you arrive by 6:00 a.m. so that we may begin promptly at
6:15.  The service lasts about an hour.

All Day        Journey Through the Garden

Plan to visit the library anytime during the 24 hours of
September 11 and take a private and personal journey
through the library's garden.  You will be greeted at the
entrance to the garden and given a written guide to lead you
on your journey.  Several times along the way, you will have
the opportunity to stop and write a few words on a card that
you will carry with you.  At the end of the journey, a volunteer
will help you attach your card to a balloon that you will then
launch and send on its own journey to wherever fate may take
it.

Every Hour, on the Hour        Words Matter

At the top of each hour, we will ask for volunteers to
read something in celebration of words.  You may read for a
minute or two or twenty - however long you like.  You may
read a passage from a book, a poem, lyrics to a song,
something original, something old and known to all, something
in Spanish, something in French....  it makes no difference at
all.  There may be no one listening, or there may be a huge
crowd -- again, it makes no difference at all.  Words matter,
and each hour we will remind ourselves of the value, the
beauty, and the joy of words.  While you are reading, a
volunteer will be recording key words and phrases, and when
you finish, those words will be turned into a Word Cloud - an
original piece of art made up of the words you spoke.  One
copy will be given to you, and one copy will be posted on the
wall.  We hope that by the end of the 24 hours of September
11 we will have hundreds of word clouds covering the wall.
You need not register in advance.  Simply be here at the top
of any hour, and you will have the opportunity to read.  If you
would like to read but have no idea what to bring, we will
happily supply you with a few paragraphs to share.

5:30 p.m.        Blackhawk Middle School Presentations

Another Libraries Remember tradition is a time set aside
for young people in our community to participate.  Work they
have done in class related to September 11 will be displayed,
and several students will speak.

7:30 p.m        Franklin Delano Roosevelt

We will be joined in the Lifelong Learning Center by
President Roosevelt.  He will speak for about an hour, and he
will share stories of his years as President and his associations
with those closest to him - Eleanor, Uncle Joe Stalin, Winston
Churchill, and, of course, his constant companion, Fala.  He
will read letters from citizens asking for help during those
difficult days, and he will recount the New Deal programs
designed to help in the days of widespread foreclosures, bank
failures, and unemployment.  President Roosevelt will share his
memories of the challenges of World War II and the many
ifs
facing the nation in 1942.  At the conclusion of his talk, the
President will respond to questions from the audience.

Please note that seating is limited and
tickets are
required.
Tickets are available, at no charge, at the Adult
Reference Desk at the library.

8:45 p.m.        USO Canteen

For the remainder of the evening, the adult side of the
library will become a USO Canteen, complete with
Depression-era desserts and music reminiscent of the World
War II era.

12:00 a.m.        Closing

Prior to closing the doors at the conclusion of this
24-hour observance, we will again gather in front of the library
for a short ceremony.
